Leah Messer Clears Up Custody Situation With Corey Simms
Leah Messer has always been there for her daughters. Contrary to reports, the Teen Mom 2 star tells Us Weekly exclusively that she never lost custody of her 8-year-old twin daughters, Ali and Aleeah.
“The current custody situation, just honestly … whatever we think is best for them, we do. We are doing the week on and then a week off,” the 26-year-old tells Us about her custody agreement with the twins’ dad and her ex-husband Corey Simms. “It’s always been 50/50. People were like, ‘Leah lost custody’ … I almost did, but I never lost custody of my children.”
Messer and Simms, 29, fought over custody of the girls in 2015 after the MTV star sought treatment for anxiety and depression. During season 6 of Teen Mom 2, Simms accused her of not getting the girls to school on time. Messer insisted exclusively to Us at the time that she was only late getting them to kindergarten once. However, she does admit the custody battle was “the lowest point” in her life.
“It would definitely be going through the custody stuff with Corey,” she tells Us. “‘Cause if anyone knows me they know that when it comes to being a mom and my girls, they are my life. They are my life. … I wasn’t in the greatest place mentally and then it was affecting me physically, like it almost cost me my children. … I became suicidal. It was a struggle. I think that would be the lowest point.”
Years later, however, Messer tells Us that things are “going great” between her and Simms.
Messer will also address her low points on her new podcast, “Life Reboot.”
“There’s a lot that I will address on the podcast. My role … is to share what I have went through and what I’ve learned as I’ve went through it,” she tells Us. “Every high and low in my life … that’s what I’m most excited to share and truly help others with things that may be going through the same things.”
“At the end of the day do what’s best for the kids,” she explains. “They’re the ones that matter.”
As for Messer’s relationship with Jeremy Calvert, with whom she shares her 5-year-old daughter Addie, she tells Us the exes have “definitely learned to coparent.”
“We are great parents and that’s all we’ll ever be,” she adds about her ex-husband. “We’re great coparents together.”
